USA (NM- FL), Central and South America ; widespread West Indies; introduced to the Lesser Antilles; introduced to New World, possibly native to India. Notes. The sweet potato weevil. This is a serious agricultural pest species of sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L.) where the larvae mine the stems. Also in coastal habitats in older and larger subterranean stems of Ipomoea pes-caprae (L.) R. Br., the goat’s foot or beach morning-glory.
