Type species: Spathoderma clenchi Scheltema, 1985 View in CoL (original designation).

Diagnosis: Spiny, sclerites spatula-like; blades long relative to base, plane of blade bent outwards from plane of base, planes usually rotated relative to each other so that the longitudinal axis, usually straight, may appear curved at waist, or proximal end of base may appear slanted ( Figs. 20K View FIGURE 20 , 22K View FIGURE 22 ); keel lacking or slight; proximal end of base asymmetrical. Waist distinct, blade narrower than base at waist, edges straight and tapered or slightly convex. Isochromes symmetrical. Oral shield sclerites in 3 rows.

Distribution: North Pacific, eastern and western north and south Atlantic including south of Iceland; Mediterranean; and western Indian Ocean; from continental shelf to abyssal depths, 49–5,320 m ( Schwabl, 1963; Scheltema, 1985; Salvini-Plawen, 1992; Scheltema & Ivanov, 2000; Ivanov & Scheltema, 2001; including unpublished data).

Composition: S. alleni Scheltema & Ivanov, 2000 ; S. bulbosum n. sp.; S. californicum ( Schwabl, 1963) ; S. clenchi Scheltema, 1985 ; S. grossum Scheltema & Ivanov, 2000 ; S. longisquamosum ( Salvini-Plawen, 1992) ; S. quadratum n. sp.; S. subulatum Ivanov & Scheltema, 2001 .
