Scydmaenus (incertae sedis) formosanus Csiki View in CoL

Scydmaenus (Cholerus) formosanus Csiki, 1937: 6 View in CoL .

Distribution. Taiwan ( Csiki, 1937: 6).

Remarks. Original description based on females. Subgenus Cholerus is defined by male secondary sexual characters only, so placement by Csiki is unjustified. Aedeagus was illustrated for a non-type specimen in Franz (1983) in such a way that the species is impossible to identify; moreover, identity of the illustrated specimen is unclear. ”; but again as? Cholerus in Franz (1985: 113); also as? Cholerus in O’Keefe & Li (1998: 160). Nominotypical subgenus is currently poorly defined and male secondary sexual traits (i.e., broadened protarsomeres) have been used by many authors as a primary diagnostic character; therefore, also placement in Scydmaenus (s. str.) is inadequately supported. Redescription of female based on type material in Franz (1985: 113).
