Scydmaenus (Scydmaenus) sinensis Franz View in CoL
Scydmaenus sinensis Franz, 1968: 537 View in CoL .
Scydmaenus (Scydmaenus) sinensis Franz View in CoL ; Vít, 2004: 226.
( Figs 19–24 View FIGURES 19–24 )
Type material examined. Holotype ( CHINA): ♂, three labels ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 19–24 ; upper panels show averse and reverse side of the same label): “Wassuland / Bzk.Sankiangkou / W.Szechuan,China / Coll.H.Becker ” [white, printed] with handwritten on reverse side “Yatzebug {?} 1800 m / Mischwaldhumus / gesiebt.13.x.34”, “ Scydmaenus / sinensis m. / det. H.Franz ” [white, handwritten and printed], “Typus” [red, handwritten] ( NHMW) . Paratype: ♂, same data as for holotype, with handwritten yellow “ Paratypus ” label ( NHMW) .
Revised diagnosis. Male. Legs and metaventrite unmodified; head and pronotum virtually impunctate; head as wide as long, with small eyes; tempora in dorsal view twice as long as eye; pronotum slightly longer than broad, with four small but distinct antebasal pits; aedeagus in dorsal view with subtriangular apical region and slender tip, in lateral view median lobe weakly curved and constricted near middle, with demarcated distal region developed as conspicuous triangular structure with its apex forming two long slanting projections directed dorsad and ventrad; sides of ostium with rows of setae; endophallus with irregular in shape, complex and coiled tubular projections.
Redescription. Body of male ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 19–24 ) elongate and strongly convex, uniformly brown, covered with light brown setae; BL 2.26–2.28 mm.
Head in dorsal view broadest at eyes, as wide as long, HL 0.45 mm, HW 0.45 mm; vertex and frons confluent, evenly convex; supraantennal tubercles feebly marked; tempora in dorsal view twice as long as eye; eye weakly convex, in lateral view distinctly oval. Frons and vertex virtually impunctate; setae relatively long and dense, suberect.Antenna slender,AnL 1.23–1.25 mm; scape and pedicel strongly elongate, antennomeres 3–6 each elongate (3–5 strongly, 6 weakly so), 7–8 each indistinctly transverse, each slightly asymmetrical, 9 slightly elongate, 10 about as long as broad, 11 slightly shorter than 9–10 combined, twice as long as broad.
Pronotum in dorsal view broadest near anterior third; PL 0.65–0.66 mm, PW 0.60–0.63 mm; anterior margin and sides in anterior third rounded, sides in posterior half nearly straight and strongly converging posterad; posterior margin nearly straight; base with two lateral pairs of small but deep and sharply marked pits, distances between all pits subequal. Pronotal disc impunctate; setae short, sparse and erect.
Elytra together oval, broadest near middle, EL 1.15–1.18 mm, EW 0.93 mm, EI 1.24–1.27. Humeral calli barely discernible; basal impressions indistinct, anterior portion of suture slightly elevated and demarcated by indistinct grooves; elytral apices separately rounded. Elytra covered with punctures more distinct than those on head and pronotum but fine and inconspicuous; setae slightly thicker than those on head and pronotum and longer than those on pronotum, moderately dense and long, suberect, not forming waving pattern. Wings short and non-functional.
Legs moderately long, robust, unmodified except for moderately broadened protarsi.
Metaventrite unmodified.
Aedeagus ( Figs 20–23 View FIGURES 19–24 ) moderately elongate, AeL 0.80 mm; median lobe in dorsal view with subtriangular apical region and elongate, narrow tip, in lateral view basal half of median lobe slightly broader than distal half, weakly curved and constricted near middle, with demarcated distal region developed as conspicuous triangular structure with its apex forming two long projections directed dorsad and ventrad; sides of ostium with rows of setae; endophallus with irregular in shape, complex and coiled tubular projections.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Sichuan.
Remarks. The uniquely shaped aedeagus of this species is almost identical to that illustrated for Scydmaenus csikii Franz, 1985 ; the latter, younger name may be a junior synonym of S. sinensis . The type specimens of S. csikii must be studied to verify this suspicion. The holotype of S. sinensis is teratological; the left eye is distinctly smaller than the right one; in the paratype male both eyes have the same size as the right eye of the holotype.
