Scydmaenus (Scydmaenus) szechuanensis Franz View in CoL
Scydmaenus szechuanensis Franz, 1968: 538 View in CoL .
Scydmaenus (Scydmaenus) szechuanensis Franz View in CoL ; Vít, 2004: 226.
( Figs 25–30 View FIGURES 25–30 )
Type material examined. Holotype ( CHINA): ♂, three labels ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 25–30 ; upper panels show averse and reverse side of the same label): “Wassuland / Bzk.Sankiangkou / W.Szechuan,China / Coll.H.Becker ” [white, printed] with handwritten on reverse side “Yatzebug {?} 1800 m / Mischwaldhumus / gesiebt.13.x.34”, “ Scydmaenus / szechuanensis m. / det. H.Franz ” [white, handwritten and printed], “Typus” [red, handwritten] ( NHMW). Paratype: ♀, same data as for holotype, with handwritten red “ Allotypus ” label ( NHMW) .
Revised diagnosis. Male. Legs and metaventrite unmodified; head and pronotum virtually impunctate; head about as wide as long, with small eyes; tempora in dorsal view twice as long as eye; pronotum about as long as broad, with four small but distinct antebasal pits; aedeagus in dorsal view gradually tapering from base to apex, apical margin with distinct subtriangular emargination separating rounded lateral lobes, in lateral view median lobe weakly recurved and with conspicuous projection above orifice, distal region subtriangular and straight, with apex directed distad; sides of ostium lacking rows of setae; endophallus with irregular in shape, complex and coiled tubular projections better discernible in lateral than in dorsal view.
Redescription. Body of male ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25–30 ) elongate and strongly convex, uniformly brown, covered with light brown setae; BL 2.20 mm.
Head in dorsal view broadest at eyes, about as wide as long, HL 0.48 mm, HW 0.45 mm; vertex and frons confluent, evenly convex; supraantennal tubercles feebly marked; tempora in dorsal view twice as long as eye; eye almost flat, in lateral view weakly oval. Frons and vertex virtually impunctate; setae relatively long and dense, suberect. Antenna slender, AnL 1.13 mm; scape and pedicel strongly elongate, antennomeres 3–6 each elongate (3 and 5 strongly, 4 and 6 weakly so), 7–8 each about as long as broad transverse, each slightly asymmetrical, 9 and 10 each about as long as broad, 11 indistinctly shorter than 9–10 combined, twice as long as broad.
Pronotum in dorsal view broadest near anterior third; PL 0.60 mm, PW 0.58 mm; anterior margin and sides in anterior third rounded, sides in posterior half nearly straight and strongly converging posterad; posterior margin nearly straight; base with two lateral pairs of very small but sharply marked pits, distance between inner pits much wider than between inner and outer pit. Pronotal disc impunctate; setae short, sparse and erect.
Elytra together oval, broadest indistinctly in front of middle, EL 1.13 mm, EW 0.88 mm, EI 1.29. Humeral calli barely discernible; basal impressions indistinct, anterior portion of suture weakly elevated and demarcated by indistinct grooves; elytral apices separately rounded. Elytra covered with punctures more distinct than those on head and pronotum but fine and inconspicuous; setae slightly thicker than those on head and pronotum and distinctly longer than those on pronotum, moderately dense and long, suberect, not forming waving pattern. Wings short, non-functional.
Legs moderately long, robust, unmodified except for moderately broadened protarsi.
Metaventrite unmodified.
Aedeagus ( Figs 26–29 View FIGURES 25–30 ) moderately elongate, AeL 0.55 mm; median lobe in dorsal view gradually and strongly tapering from base to apex, apical margin with deep subtriangular emargination separating rounded lateral lobes, in lateral view basal half of median lobe slightly broader than distal half, weakly recurved and with conspicuous projection above orifice, in dorsal view projection subrectangular with concave sides and straight distal margin; distal region in lateral view subtriangular and straight, with apex directed distad; sides of ostium lacking rows of setae; endophallus with irregular in shape, complex and coiled tubular projections better discernible in lateral than in dorsal view.
Female. Externally similar to male; differs in unmodified protarsi. BL 2.18 mm; HL 0.48 mm, HW 0.45 mm, AnL 1.05 mm; PL 0.58 mm, PW 0.58 mm; EL 1.13 mm, EW 0.98 mm, EI 1.15.
Distribution. Sichuan.
