Heteroglymma Faust View in CoL
Heteroglymma Faust, 1897: 263 View in CoL .
Type species: Trigonops biramosus Motschulsky, 1859 , by original designation.
Description. Integument black or ferruginous, sparsely covered with appressed scales. Head with curved furrow separating rostral base; vertex laterally with radial furrows. Eyes convex, protruding; separated from front margin of prothorax by ca. 1.2 X length of eye. Profile ( Fig. 40b View FIGURE 40 ) anteriorly with marked constriction. Rostrum. Dorsum sparsely squamose, with median furrow; apical declivity distinct, with scattered sunk-in scales, anteriorly with sparse setae; dorsal profile subangulate, above level of forehead. Antenna. Scape evenly widening from base to apex, squamose, with suberect bristles. Funicle with article 2 much longer than article 1 (1.8 X). Pronotum as long as wide. Metanepisternum anteriorly subtriangular, subglabrous, posterior portion narrow, largely covered by elytra. Elytra dorsally weakly convex or flattened, of subrotund or subtriangular shape, same species with sublateral flanges or above declivity with lateral protrusions; sublaterally with additional rows of punctures confounding regular striae. Legs. Protibia in basal third with blunt tooth, ventral outline bisinuate; meso- and metatibia simple. Venter. Procoxae subcontiguous, distance to apex 0.5 X distance to base of prothorax. Mesoventral process trapezoid, 2.50 X as long as wide. Abdomen. Female ventrites 3–5 exposed, laterally 0.6 X length of ventrites 1–2. Genitalia. Penis with apodeme 1.5–1.8 X as long as body of penis, firmly attached to body of penis. Transfer apparatus spiniform, curved, ca. 0.3 X as long as body of penis. Endophallus in mid portion densely covered with spiculae.
Notes. The gender of the genus name is neuter ( Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal, 1999). However, it was treated as feminine by most authors, e.g. Faust (1897) and Heller (1900). Thus, the original spelling of some species epithets is incorrect. This genus contained a number of disparate elements until Marshall (1956) excluded the species from the Lesser Sunda Islands and other areas outside of Sulawesi. I feel that Heteroglymma is best defined based on the blunt tooth / angulation at the middle of its protibia. The center of its diversity appears to be Sulawesi´s north arm. A revision of all Heteroglymma species is outside the scope of this study. The type species and one additional species are redescribed below. Additionally, species with incorrect original spelling are listed.
