Identification. The representatives of this genus characterized by the glabrous body without metallic hue and the curly bracket-shaped base of pronotum ( Zaslavskij 1956). The main morphological features that distinguish this species from its congeners are the shape and dorsal punctures of pronotum ( Zaslavskij 1956; Smreczyński 1974; Lohse 1983). The lateral sides of pronotum are nearly straight in dorsal view, evenly tapering from base to notch of anterior margin. Dorsal pronotal punctures are large and densely arranged, puncture diameter about 0.05 mm. Dorsal surface of pronotum is comparatively stronger convex than that in Baris nesapia , without any visible concavity. Intervening spaces on elytra are flattened, each with a single longitudinal row of punctures ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 : A). From morphologically close B. nesapia it can be distinguished also by the shape of male aedeagus ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 : C, D). External sexual dimorphism is inconspicuous, males have slightly shorter, comparatively more strongly curved and denser punctured (especially on lateral sides of basal part) rostrum.

Published local records. The species was recorded from Staburadze [Staburags] surroundings (Aizkraukle municipality, Latvia) by Lindberg (1932), Silene nature park (Augšdaugavas municipality, Latvia) ( Barševskis et al. 2002), Kaliningrad [Königsberg] ( Bercio and Folwaczny 1979), Bagrationovsk, Chernyakhovsk, Gur’evsk, Gvardeysk, Zelenogradsk (Kaliningrad Region) ( Alekseev 2016) without detailed faunistic information. The species was considered very rare by previous authors and thought distributed only in the eastern part of Lithuania ( Pileckis & Monsevičius 1997). Detailed faunistic information is present only from Krāslava ( Barševskis 1993) and Kaišiadorys ( Stanionis & Petrikas 2011) administrative units.

General distribution. This species is widely distributed throughout the Palaearctic Region in the temperate and subtropical zones from France and Norway to the Russian Far East, Korean Peninsula, and Japan: northern boundary of the distribution range extends towards 61°N in Finland, Kirov Region, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), and Magadan Oblats (three latter - Russia); its southern distribution extent passes throughout Italy, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, northern Caucasus, Mongolia, and Guizhou Province of China ( Alonso-Zarazaga et al. 2023; Izmailova et al. 2007; Legalov 2020; Prena et al. 2014c; Rassi et al. 2015; Yunakov et al. 2018).

Notes on biology. This species is narrowly oligophagous on Artemisia species. In Europe most common on Artemisia vulgaris , rarely also A. absinthium or A. campestris . Larvae develop in lower parts of stems, pupate inside host plants ( Burakowski et al. 1995).

Local occurrence and phenology. This species appears to be the most abundant Bariditae species in the study region. Altogether, it was recorded from 37 administrative units: 15 in Latvia, 16 in Lithuania, and six in KR ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 : A). The adults were collected in non natural (disturbed), relatively dry habitats on Artemisia vulgaris . Maximum number of adults recorded in June; the earliest record: April 10, the latest: August 16.
