Diagnosis (based on J.L. Barnard and Karaman 1991)
Of cyphocarin form, head tall, horizontally short, grotesque. Antennae flagella long, base of flagellum on antenna 1 with callynophore, accessory flagellum large. Mouthparts forming a quadrate bundle. Upper lip and epistome separate, dominant in neither size nor projection. Mandible incisor ordinary, molar triturative, large, quadrate; palp well setose, attached opposite to molar. Maxilla 1 inner plate strongly setose; palp 2-articulate and large. Maxilliped inner and outer plates well developed; palp strongly exceeding outer plate, article 4 well developed. Coxae 1–3 small, strongly shortened and partly covered by coxa 4, latter large and visible, strongly lobate (spined) and excavate. Coxa 5 usually large. Gnathopod 1 short and simple; carpus and propodus subequal; dactylus large. Gnathopod 2 minutely subchelate; propodus shorter than carpus, often both very elongate and linear. Uropod 3 peduncle elongate, aequiramous; outer ramus 1- or 2-articulate. Telson elongate and deeply cleft.
