Hedwigia ciliata (Hedw.) Boucher, Extr. Fl. Abbeville View in CoL : 80. 1803.

Type:— SWITZERLAND (Lectotype: G, selected and commented by Hedenäs 1994).

Note:— Hedwigia ciliata is characterized by (1) leaf margins recurved at proximal 2/3–3/4 of leaf length, (2) 2–3 papillae per cell in mid-leaf on abaxial side, (3) hyaline hair points moderately long, constituting 15–25% of leaf length, and (4) spores (28–)30–35(–38) μm in diameter ( Ignatova et al. 2016). Although in the catalogue edited by Jia & He (2013), only H. ciliata was reported in China. Regrettably, we have not found any specimens of H. ciliata in China, and this species may not be as widespread as previously assumed. In fact, this situation is not surprising. When Ignatova et al. (2016) revised the distribution of Hedwigia in Russia, they found that the distribution of H. ciliata is limited to European Russia, mainly to its NW regions, while all its records from Asian Russia were erroneous. Nevertheless, further investigation is needed to ascertain if H. ciliata occurs in China or not.
