Chelymorpha juvenca Boheman 1854:84
Male. Length 7.7–10.2 mm, width 6–8 mm (n=10). Black, pubescent.
HEAD. Surface black, rugose, supraorbital area punctate; frons with scattered long setae. Prosternum smooth, pubescent. Genal surface with punctures and short setae. Interocular width 2 times diameter of eyes. Antennae short reaching pronotal base; antennomere III longer than IV, antennomere I shorter than XI. Clypeus subtrapezoidal in shape, over 2 times wider than long, surface with sparse punctures and scattered setae, Labrum over 3 times wider than long; surface smooth.
THORAX. Pronotum 2–3 times wider than long; surface pubescent, black; anterior margin emarginated, margination U-shaped; base sinuous; hind angles sharp and produced behind with fine punctures; explanate margin with coarse punctures; pronotal disc with distinctive longitudinal groove. Scutellum triangular, surface smooth, black. Elytral surface pubescent, black with variable orange spots; elytron with four, two or no spots ( Figs 12 View FIGURE 12 F–G); punctures moderately coarse; humeri rounded, surface pubescent, punctate, black. Prosternal process pubescent, grooved at base, apex rounded. Mesosternal process deeply notched.
ABDOMEN. Ventrites surface pubescent, black. Aedeagus length less than 2 mm, apex acute (Fig. 20 C).
Female. Similar to male. Length 11–12.5 mm, width 7.5–8 mm (n=15). Interocular width 2 times diameter of eyes. Clypeus over 2 times wider than long. Labrum over 3 times wider than long. Pronotum 2–3 times wider than long. Spermatheca partially sclerotized (Fig. 20 C), less than 2 times longer than wide; apex acute, with velum; spermathecal duct weakly coiled.
Comparative note. This species is distinguished from O. epilachnoides by its sub-trapezoidal clypeus, the pronotal groove, the elytra pubescent, and spermathecal duct weakly coiled (Fig. 20 C).
Remarks. Champion (1893:154) mentioned that O. juvenca was “apparently peculiar to the eastern and southern part of Mexico” but we recorded it in the central-north of Mexico (San Luis Potosí).
Chelymorpha cruxnigra Boheman ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 A–C) has been considered as a synonym of O. juvenca ( Borowiec & Świętojańska 2016) . Based on his text, Champion (1893:155) saw a specimen in the BMNH’s Hamlet Clark Collection (“doubtless the type ”) which he considered as a variety of O. juvenca . However, the type specimen ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 A–C) from BMNH has the diagnostic characters of Chelymorpha View in CoL —an antennal groove and a deep groove on the prosternal process. Thus, Sekerka (2016) has restored its species status in Chelymorpha View in CoL ; however, we have examined the specimens deposited in the Manchester Museum determined by Spaeth as O. juvenca var. cruxnigra and we have determined that these specimens belong to the genus Ogdoecosta View in CoL .
Host plant. Unknown.
Known distribution. México: Hidalgo, Oaxaca, and Veracruz . Costa Rica: Cartago ( Borowiec & Świętojańska 2016).
Type material examined. Lectotype (des. L. Borowiec) ( NHRS) ( Figs 12 View FIGURE 12 A–C). México, No locality . Paralectotype ( IZPAS) ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 D–E). México, No locality.
