Distribution. Nearctic, adventive in Europe, recorded from A/S ( Klimaszewski et al. 2021). Canada: NB, NS, NT, ON, PE, QC, SK. USA: MA (NSR), NH (NSR), NY, VT.
Collection and Habitat data. Collected in leaf litter at a birch sap drip, and by flight intercept and baited funnel traps. Collected from May to September. In Canada recorded from bird nests in forested habitats, at agricultural farms (pigeon coop), barred owl nests in tree holes (usually in large trees), and in artificial nest boxes (nest contents usually consisted of rich decaying organic material with bones, fur, owl pellets, portions of dead prey items such as mice, squirrels and small birds, often with strong urine smell), nest contents of the great horned owl ( Bubo virginianus (Gmelin)) , boreal owl ( Aegolius funereus richardsoni (Bonaparte)) , and northern saw-whet owl ( Aegolius acadicus (Gmelin)) (Majka et al. 2006, Webster et al. 2009). This species also occurs in decaying organic material such as carrion, and decaying vegetables inside a plastic compost bin, which in some respects mimics the conditions found within a tree-holes occupied by nesting birds ( Klimaszewski et al. 2021).
