Generic diagnosis: Groves & Flannery (1994) considered three cranial characters (with the addition of one soft-tissue character) to be diagnostic of species of Uromys : a hard palate that extends posterior of the posterior margin of M 3, I 1 is much deeper than it is wide, and a greatly expanded anterolateral spine on the auditory bulla.
