Discussion: Major compendia summarize the systematic biology of the species in Europe and Russia ( Gromov and Erbajeva, 1995; Mitchell-Jones et al., 1999; Niethammer, 1982 d). Allozymic variation between isabellinus from Kopet Dag Mtns and bellicosus from Ukranian steppes discussed by Mezhzherin (2001 b). Cricetulus migratorius has occurred in the southern Levant since 80,000 -70,000 years before present and apparently replaced two fossil species (recorded as Allocricetus ), C. magnus (70,000 -60,000 years before present) and C. jesreelicus (not recorded later than 120,000 years before present) ( Tchernov, 1992, 1994, and cited references). See Zagordnyuk (1992 b), for comments regarding scientific names applied to Ukranian samples.
