SUBFAMILY DOLICHOPODINAE LATREILLE, 1809: 239 View in CoL View at ENA , 290 Genus DOLICHOPUS Latreille, 1796
DOLICHOPUS Latreille, 1796: 159 View in CoL . Type species: Musca ungulata Linnaeus [Palearctic], designation by Latreille, 1810: 443.
RAGHENEURA Rondani, 1856: 144 View in CoL . Type species: Dolichopus griseipennis Stannius View in CoL , by original designation. Dyte (1975) states ‘‘ Ragheneura Rondani View in CoL has priority over Eudolichopus Frey View in CoL , and the use of Rondani’s name would create confusion as an emendation of it has been used in another sense’’ [i.e., Rhagoneurus Loew 1864b View in CoL , an unavailable senior synonym of Lichtwardtia Enderlein 1912 View in CoL ].
HYGROCELEUTHUS Loew, 1857a: 10 View in CoL . Type species: Dolichopus latipennis Fallén View in CoL , designation by Coquillett, 1910c: 554. Listed as subgenus of Dolichopus View in CoL in Negrobov (1991).
SPATHICHIRA Bigot, 1888a View in CoL : xxiv. Type species: Dolichopus funditor Loew View in CoL , by original designation.
SPATICHIRA Bigot, 1888b View in CoL : xxx, error or unjustified emendation listed by Foote et al. (1965).
EUDOLICHOPUS Frey, 1915: 10 View in CoL (as subgenus). Type species: Musca plumipes Scopoli , designation by Steyskal, 1973b: 347. See notes un der Ragheneura Rondani, 1856 View in CoL .
LEUCODOLICHOPUS Frey, 1915: 10 View in CoL (as subgenus). Type species: Dolichopus remipes Wahlberg View in CoL , designation by Steyskal, 1973b: 348.
MELANODOLICHOPUS Frey, 1915: 10 View in CoL (as subgenus). Type species: Dolichopus stenhammari Zetterstedt View in CoL , designation by Steyskal, 1973b: 348.
HYDROCELEUTHUS Aldrich, 1921: 8 . Type species: Dolichopus latipennis Fallén View in CoL , automatic. Unjustified emendation.
MACRODOLICHOPUS Stackelberg, 1933: 109 View in CoL (as subgenus). Type species: Dolichopus diadema Haliday View in CoL , by original designation. Listed as subgenus of Dolichopus View in CoL in Negrobov (1991).
RAGHENERURA , error by Dyte (1975: 232).
NOTES: Dolichopus View in CoL is primarly Holarctic and is most diverse in the Nearctic, but also occurs in the Oriental realm and on Hawaii.
Three widespread Nearctic species also occur south of the United States but have not been recorded south of Mexico ( Robinson,
1970b). Dolichopus species are among the largest and most common members of the family in North America. The majority of Dolichopus species prefer humid habitats and some are restricted to saltmarshes.
