Known from the Northeast region of Brazil to Uruguay and widely cultivated for edible fruit ( Govaerts et al. 2010, Proença & Sobral 2006).
Shrubs 2–4 m tall, leaves 3.0–5.5 × 1.2–3.0 cm, midvein flat or raised on adaxial lamina surface, raceme with the main axis reduced, bracts elliptical, bracteoles linear, hypanthium 8-ribbed, pilose and fruits subglobose, 8-ribbed with seeds immaculate.
