Widely distributed and cultivated in tropical America, from Trinidad to northeastern Argentina and Brazil ( Govaerts et al. 2010, Sobral et al. 2010). Considered extinct in the State of Pernambuco, with no records in the last 40 years.

Trees 4–7 m tall. This species differs from other species of Plinia by having leaves 7.5–10.0 × 3–4 cm, a flat or raised midvein on the adaxial laminar surface, rotund bracts, linear bracteoles, the raceme terminated by a dichasium and the calyx closed in flower bud, tearing open irregularly.
