Suphisellus flavolineatus ( Régimbart, 1889)
( Figs 6 View FIGURES 4–6 , 13 View FIGURES 11–13 , 15–21 View FIGURES 14–17 View FIGURES 18–21 )
Suphisellus melzeri Zimmermann, 1925 (syn. n.)
Type material examined. LECTOTYPE: m* (here designated, in MNHN), labelled: “ LECTOTYPE / Suphisellus / flavolineatus ( Regimbart, 1889) / det. Urcola et al. 2020” [yellow label; typed print], “Brésil/ Caraça/ P. Germain / 2° Semestre 1884” [white label with black border, typed print], “ MUSEUM PARIS / COLL MAURICE REGIMBART/ 1908” [blue label with black border, typed print], “ SYNTYPE ” [red label, typed print], “ SYNTYPE / Canthydrus / flavolineatus Régimbart ,/ 1889” [white label with black border, typed print] . PARALECTOTYPES ( MNHN): Same data as lectotype (7 exs., m*f*), except two with “ TYPE ” [red; typed print]; one of these missing red “ SYNTYPE ” label .
Suphisellus melzeri . LECTOTYPE: m* (here designated, in ZSM), labelled: “ LECTOTYPE / Suphisellus / melzeri ( Zimmermann, 1925) / det. Urcola et al. 2020” [yellow label; typed print], “S. Paulo” [white label, typed print] “ Paratypus / Suphisellus / melzeri Zimm. / Staatssamml. München” [red label, typed print, subsequently handwritten with: Suphisellus / melzeri Zimm. ]. PARALECTOTYPE ( ZSM): 1 ex. “ Brasilien ” [white label, typed print], “S. Paulo” [white label, handwritten], “Samml. A./ Zimmermann” [white label with black border, typed print] “ Holotypus / Suphisellus / melzeri Zimm. / Staatssamml. München” [red label, typed print, subsequently handwritten with: Suphisellus / melzeri Zimm. ]. We consider this is a unauthorized designation of a holotype, as in the original description no holotype is designated, and that description also gives no evidence that Zimmermann has studied only a single specimen.

Diagnosis (male). Medium size, lectotype TL = 3.25 mm; [paralectotypes = 3.25–3.4 mm]. Brownish-red background; elytra with five longitudinal dark bands ( Figs 15–17 View FIGURES 14–17 ); dorsal surface with weak punctation in addition to longitudinal series of elytra; prosternum with a distinct transverse line of 8 or 9 stiff setae anterior to procoxae and prosternal process, line interrupted medially; prosternal process as in Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–6 , with posterior margin broad, curved, with medial longitudinal groove on posteriorly ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–6 ). Aedeagus as in Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11–13 , 18–21 View FIGURES 18–21 . Male median lobe ( Figs 13 View FIGURES 11–13 d–f, 21) in lateral view nearly uniformly wide along length with rounded apex, strongly curved dorsally at about mid length, base large, comprised of lateral notches and a medial hook-like process; left lateral lobe in lateral view ( Figs 13b View FIGURES 11–13 , 19 View FIGURES 18–21 ) elongate, slender, slightly curved, with hair-like setae on distal half, longer at apex.
Distribution. Argentina, Brazil.
Remarks. Comparison with the male genitalia of several paralectotypes of S. flavolineatus confirms that the specimens collected in Argentina and Brazil belong to this species. Also, comparison of the habitus and male genitalia (based on photographs kindly provided by Ditta Amran Balke, ZSM) of a syntype of S. melzeri Zimmermann, 1925 with the types of S. flavolineatus revealed that they are conspecific and, therefore, S. melzeri must be considered a junior subjective synonym of S. flavolineatus (new synonymy). While two specimens of S. flavolineatus include red “TYPE” labels, it is unknown when these were added. Régimbart (1889) and Zimmermann (1925) did not designate any holotype, and no subsequent literature since has designated a lectotype.
Habitat and Biology. The only adult of S. flavolineatus collected in Argentina was found in a temporary pool (0.4 m maximum depth) with abundant floating vegetation and high sun exposure, in association with the following noterid species: Hydrocanthus sp. (larva), H. sharpi Balfour-Browne, 1939 (larva), H. debilis Sharp, 1882 , H. socius Sahlberg, 1844 , Suphisellus nigrinus , S. rufipes Sharp, 1882 . Specimens from Brazil were collected in pools and ponds with abundant vegetation. Specific habitat data for type material are unknown.
