Pheidole nitidicollis HNS

Pheidole dimidiata var. nitidicollis Emery, 1896: 79 HNS . Lectotype major worker (here designated, as labeled by Wilson 2003) and associated paralectotype minor worker: Costa Rica, Jimenez [a site near present day La Selva Biological Station] (Alfaro) [ MCSN] (not examined). Subspecies of dimidiata HNS : Emery, 1922: 107. Raised to species: Wilson, 2003: 474.

Pheidole sagana Wheeler HNS , W.M. 1934: 169. Lectotype major worker (here designated, as labeled by Wilson 2003) and associated paralectotype minor worker: Mexico, Veracruz, Mirador (Skwarra) [ MCZ] (examined). See also: Wilson, 2003: 501. New synonymy.

Geographic Range

Mexico to Costa Rica.

Biology

This species occurs in mature wet forest. It is a relatively common arboreal ant, nesting in dead branches and under epiphytes. Colonies often appear large, with workers scattered over a wide area.

Comments

The conclusion of synonymy of P. sagana HNS under P. nitidicollis HNS is based on the illustrations of type material of P. nitidicollis HNS in Wilson (2003), the identification as P. nitidicollis HNS of abundant new material from near the type locality, and the direct comparison of that material with the types of P. sagana HNS .
