6. Stillingia lanceolata Nuttall (1837: 176) View in CoL . Lectotype (here designated):— UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Arkansas: in the prairies at Belle Point, Fort Smith, without date, D. Pitcher s. n. (NY 00148781!, isolectotype BM! [photo in MO!]). [= Stillingia sylvatica Linnaeus (1767: 126) ].
Nuttall (1837) characterized the species in the protologue with “ Herbacea ; foliis subsessilibus, ovato-lanceolatis acutis, serratis ”, and added that it was “ nearly allied to S. sylvatica ”. The author also added that the specimen had been collected “ In the prairies at Belle Point, Fort Smith ”. However, neither collector name, number, or herbarium were mentioned. Based on the location pointed out by Nuttall (1837), Rogers (1951) recognized this collection as belonging to Pitcher s.n. Specimens in agreement with the data of the protologue were found in BM and NY. The specimen deposited at NY (00148781) was selected as the lectotype since it is best conserved, although BM is considered one of the main herbaria housing specimens collected by Nuttall.
