Type Locality: Madagascar.
Vernacular Names: Greater Hedgehog Tenrec.
Synonyms: Setifer acanthurus Boddaert 1785 ; Setifer fontoynonti G. Grandidier 1930 ; Setifer melantho Thomas 1926 ; Setifer nigrescens I. Geoffroy 1839 ; Setifer nigricans Bartlett 1875 ; Setifer spinosus Desmarest 1820 .
Distribution: All latitudes and phytographic zones: eastern humid forest, central highlands, northern highlands, sambirano, western deciduous forest, spiny bush, Madagascar.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Dasogale fontoynonti was based on a juvenile Setifer setosus , see Poduschka and Poduschka (1982:253) and MacPhee (1987 b:133).
