Tiphia quinquecincta Fabricius 1775:353 . Holotype female; North America (LONDON: Banks Coll.).

Tiphia namea Fabricius 1805:233 . Holotype female; “ Carolina ” (COPENHAGEN). Synonymized by Turner 1909.

Sapyga subulata Say 1823:75 . Syntype males: Missouri and Pennsylvania (Destroyed). Synonymized by Krombein 1938.

Myzine proxima Guérin Méneville 1837:581 . Holotype male; (Lost?). Synonymized by Krombein 1938.

Plesia menechma Lepeletier 1845:583 . Holotype male; USA: Carolina (lost?). New synonymy.

Male.―Body length 17–21 mm. Head: frons punctures small, contiguous near antennal lobes, becoming larger, shallower and sparser toward midocellus; ocellocular distance equal to interocellar distance; flagellomere I length 1.5x breadth; flagellomere XI length twice breadth; hypostomal angle forming right angle in side view. Thorax: mesopleuron without omaulus, punctures 0.5–1.0 PD apart; propodeum transversely rugosopunctate; fore, mid and hindcoxae unmodified. Metasoma: tergum VII medially with longitudinal crease or groove apicomedially, apical teeth convex, apically acute. Genital capsule ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 13 – 22 ): paramere ventral lobe 3.5x as broad as long, spines extending along apical fourth of ventral lobe, dorsal lobe marginal setae fewer than 6, less than half as long as volsella; volsella three-fourths paramere length, flattened in cross-section, setose apically; aedeagus apical bulb 1.5–2.0x as broad as shaft below. Color: black, with yellow markings;; clypeus yellow; inner eye margin with yellow band along inner margin; antennal lobe with yellow spot; pronotum with broad anterior and posterior yellow bands; mesopleuron with large anterior and smaller posterior yellow spots; scutum, scutellum and metanotum with medial yellow spots; tegula yellow; coxae, femora and tibiae with yellow band or spot; tarsi yellow; propodeum with large yellow lateral spot; metasomal terga I–VII with transverse posterior yellow band, sterna II–VI with elongate posterolateral yellow spot; wing membrane darkly brown-tinted. Ve st it ur e.―silvery.

Female.―Body length 16–22 mm. Head: frons punctures 0–0.5 PD apart near antennal lobes, becoming sparser (1–2 PD apart) near midocellus; ocellocular distance 2.0–2.2x interocellar distance; vertex punctures 1–6 PD apart; hypostomal angle forming right angle in lateral view. Thorax: pronotum dorsal surface without tiny interpunctures between punctures, except sometimes along to of anterior declivity; propodeum laterally coarsely transversely ridged, posterior surface with fine transverse ridges dorsally, ventrally with fine ridges radiating dorsally from petiole; forebasitarsis with seven rake spines. Color: black, with yellow markings, antenna and mandible red; clypeus partly yellow; posterior and inner eye margins with yellow band, extending across antennal lobes; pronotum large anterolateral yellow spot or transverse band and transverse yellow band along posterior margin; mesopleuron with large anterior and sometimes posterior yellow spot; scutum with medial and lateral yellow spot; tegula yellow; scutellum and metanotum with medial yellow spot; propodeum with sublateral yellow band; femora basally black to red, apically yellow; tibiae and tarsi orange; metasomal terga I–V with complete or partial subbasal yellow band, sterna II–VI or V with lateral yellow spot; wings evenly orange-tinted. Vestiture: silvery.

Discussion.―The most distinctive feature of this species is the amber-tinted coloration of the wings in both sexes. Myzinum quinquecinctum otherwise resembles carolinianum as discussed under that species. Males of both species share the longitudinally grooved or creased apical metasomal tergum. Myzinum quinquecinctum is more widespread than carolinianum , occurring from Delaware to Quebec, west to Colorado and south to Florida and Costa Rica.

Turner’s synonymy of namea under quinquecinctum was confirmed after examination of the holotype female, which shares all of the diagnostic features of that species.
