Distribution and habitat: — Phlegmariurus dentatus is a common terrestrial species in the Azores and grows on steep, sandy slopes, often along roads, on San Miguel, Terceira, Madeira, San Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo Islands ( Schäfer 2001, Fernandez Prieto et al. 2008).
Remarks: —Although this species has been reported from La Reunion (Øllgaard 1987, 1992), it is actually endemic to the Azores and Madeira. These islands are the westernmost extension of the European floristic realm ( Jalas & Suominen 1972), and hence Phlegmariurus dentatus is the only representative of the genus in Europe.
