Type Locality: "in nova Hispania?" Restricted by Mearns (1896:443) to "Toluca, [ Mexico,] Mexico." .

Distribution: S New Mexico and W Texas ( USA) to Jalisco and S Puebla (C Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Ictidomys ( Hall, 1981:394) . Known to hybridize at several localities with tridecemlineatus ( Cothran and Honeycutt, 1984; Cothran et al., 1977). Reviewed by Young and Jones (1982, Mammalian Species No. 164).
