Type locality. Peru, Junín, San Ramón, Sector Quebrada Santa Rosa, “Fundo Génova”, small river, 1066m, 11o05´44.1”S 75o21´17.1”W. Holotype female ZFMK.

Male. Male unknown.

Female. As in P. mima except: Head: Frons extremely rugose on dorsal surface of the frontal prominence, white pollen sparse on dorsal ⅓ of frons. Occiput ventral pile all white and scale-like. Thorax: Scutum lateral ⅓ and scutellum pollen with a metallic blue shine. Pleuron pile short and appressed; metaepisternum and metaepimeron dark brown. Calypter white, dorsal lobe bare. Plumula absent. Halter white. Wing: hyaline with only bc, c and sc dark brown; alula narrow, as wide as c cell. Legs: Metatibia pale only on basal ¼, pile of metacoxa entirely white. Abdomen: All abdominal pile very short. Second and 3rd abdominal tergites parallel sided. Fourth tergite widening slightly towards apex. Second tergite baso-lateral corners pale, with pair of fasciate narrow maculae medially. Third tergite basal ½ pale except for lateral margin. Fourth tergite similar in colour to 3rd, but also with a narrow dark brown vitta medially. Genitalia: 7th tergite rectangular, wide and short, weakly sclerotized medially; 7th segment lateral sclerite rectangular narrow, connected basodorsally to 7th tergite by sclerotized strip, without baso-ventral extensions. Eighth tergite unsclerotized medially and appearing as reduced to a pair of sclerites, basal crest wide. Tenth tergite reduced to a narrow sclerotized strip, with apico-lateral extensions fused ventrally to cercus.

Length. 13mm; wing 6mm.

Distribution. Peru (Junín).

Primary type. Holotype: Female in good condition (except wings bent downward at midpoint). Specimen was originally in 100% EtOH and had DNA extracted (by immersion in heated solution for 24h) prior to mounting. Genitalia dissected and placed in a plastic tube pinned with the specimen. Holotype labels: ‘ PERU. Junín, Chanchamayo, San // Ramón, Sector Quebrada Santa Rosa, // “Fundo Génova”, Malaise trap, // 11o05´44.4”S 75o21´19.6”W, // 1080m., 07–10 Jul 2008. // Col. X. Comments. This species corresponds to sp 52 in the cladograms of Miranda (2011).

Etymology. The specific epithet is a patronym honouring Dr. Ximo Mengual, colleague syrphidologist who collected some of the specimens, of this and other species, used in this study. The name is to be treated as a noun in the genitive case.
