Pelecinobaccha pilinigridensis View in CoL Miranda sp. nov.

Map 11. Figure 36 View FIGURE 36. a – g (a–g).

Type locality. Costa Rica, Puntarenas, 1Km W Progresso, Zona Protectora Las Tablas, 1350m, 8°26'N 82°52'W. Holotype male INBio.

Male. Head: Black. Face with only black pile, ventral pile sometimes brown, with dense white pollen, apex of tubercle with no pollen, shiny. Lunule pale above antennal insertion, central macula broadly connected dorsally to frontal triangle color. Frontal triangle with silvery-white pollen restricted to small ventro-lateral traces that connect to pollen from face by differently oriented pollen. Vertical triangle with 3 rows of pile, but most pile concentrated in a single median row; ocellar triangle ~1.5 times its length from posterior eye margin. Eye contiguity shorter than vertical triangle length. Eye with sub-triangular indentation on posterior margin positioned slightly dorsal to antenna insertion. Antennal insertions distinctly separated. Antenna black. Dorsal ¼ of occiput with 2 rows of simple black pile, anterior row shorter; middle ½ with 3–4 rows of pile, posterior row long, white and scale-like, anterior rows shorter, black and simple; ventral ¼ with 3 irregular rows of white, scale-like pile, anterior rows slightly shorter.

Thorax: Scutum black, mainly dull pollinose and with inconspicuous pair of sub-median vittae of white pollen visible from a posterior view; scutum black pilose, pile longer than in other Pelecinobaccha species, and pile longer on notopleuron, and with anterior row black pilose with shorter pile in the middle. Scutellum black, with long, black pile, shiny pollinose, pollen differently oriented on base from remainder of scutellum, subscutellar fringe pile long and black. Pleuron black and with black pile on anterior anepisternum, posterior ½ of posterior anepisternum, anterior anepimeron, ventro- and dorso-posterior katepisternum and katepimeron, with a few white pile ventro-posteriorly on posterior anepisternum, ventro- and dorso-posterior katepisternum, katepimeron and metaepisternum, and the pile is densely arranged on the posterior anepisternum, anterior anepimeron and dorsoposterior katepisternum. Plumula long and dark golden. Calypter grey, fringe black. Halter stem dark grey, capitulum yellow.

Wing: Light brown, anterior margin dark (cells bc, c, sc, r, r1, r2+3 and bm), entirely microtrichose; alula light brown, darker dorsally, basally 1.3 times and apically 3 times as broad as c cell, entirely microtrichose.

Legs: Proleg dark brown, apical ½ of profemur slightly lightened. Mesoleg dark brown, apical ⅓ of mesofemur, basal ½ of mesotibia and apical ½ of mesobasitarsomere slightly lightened. Metaleg dark brown, pale on apex of metafemur and apical ¼ of metabasitarsomere to 3rd or 4th metatarsomere, 5th, and sometimes 4th, metatarsomere brown.

Abdomen: Black; 3 times as long as thorax. First tergite with long, erect, black pile and shiny pollen. Second tergite long, length 3.5 times minimum width, with latero-median faint pale spots; 2nd tergite with subapical central triangular region of dull black pollen, and with very long, erect and black pile, except short and appressed dorsally. Third tergite trapezoidal, base very narrow, length 2.5 times minimum width, sometimes with faint pale basolateral corners and a pair of very short basal vittae; 3rd tergite with large central triangular region of dull black pollen, subshining where pale vittae might be present, and with short, appressed and black pile, except slightly longer baso-laterally. Fourth tergite rectangular and wide, and with short, appressed and black pile; 4th tergite dull black pollen absent only on base, apex and, in some specimens, on a pair of short central vittae. Fifth tergite rectangular and wide, remaining characteristics as on 4th. First sternite with long pile. Genitalia: Cercus with 1–2 regular rows of pile on medial margin and 2–3 regular rows on lateral margin. Surstylus long, directed ventrally, with setulae (around 16) ventrally on apex, pilose on basal ½ of the dorsal surface. Subepandrial sclerite weakly sclerotized medially, with lateral lobes extended posteriorly, “M”shaped. Hypandrium with ventral notch extending to anterior ⅔. Phallapodeme mostly weakly sclerotized. Distiphallus smooth and anterior surface straight. Postgonite with pile mainly on ventral surface, ventral surface concave, extended baso-ventrally, dorsal surface concave; postgonite apex slightly convex anteriorly, with convex ventral extremity and acute dorsal extremity.

Female: Female unknown.

Length. 10–15mm; wing 7.5–10.5mm.

Distribution. Costa Rica (Puntarenas).

Primary type. Holotype: Male in good condition, right proleg and genitalia dissected and placed in individual plastic tubes pinned with the specimen. Holotype labels: ‘ COSTA RICA, Prov. Puntarenas, // Quebrada Quince, 1 km O. Est. // Progreso, Zona Protectora Las // Tablas. 1350m. 20 JUL 1996. L. // Angulo. Comments. Similar to P. pilipes but P. pilinigridensis does not have long and dense pile on the metafemur and metatibia ( Fig. 36g View FIGURE 36. a – g ).

Etymology. The specific epithet is a noun phrase in apposition that means ‘thick black hair’.
