16. Ornithacris turbida (Walker, 1870)

Diagnosis: The genus can easily be separated from Anacridium and Schistocerca by its prostemal process which is strongly curved backwards, nearly touching mesosterum, inflated in middle, with conical apex; male subgenital plate elongate, acutely conical, male circus straight, very wide in basal part.

Habitats: The species feeds on a wide variety of grasses. A grassland species but partly arboricolous. The specimens were collected from alfalfa and grass from one locality only. Probably a migrating species but true swarming is not known.

Material examined: Wadi Haya region , Al Abyad, 1 ♂, 1 ♀, on alfalfa &grass, 2.xi.1993 .

Localities: Libya: Fezzan: AlAbyad.

Distribution: Gold Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Sudan, Congo.

Remarks: This subspecies is distributed in Ghana, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda and in Libya approximately at 13 N. latitude (Dirsh, 1964).
