Now: Phalacrocorax brasilianus brasilianus ( J.F. Gmelin, 1789) . See Ogilvie-Grant (1898: 343) and Hellmayr & Conover (1948a: 142).
Holotype: ZMB 14225 ( Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 79 sub “ Halieus ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ Februar ” [= 11 Feb 1831; Meyen 1834b: 322] in “ Chile ” [= Mostazal, Chile; see below].
Type locality. Meyen (1834a: 114) reported having seen two birds sitting on a tree “im Innern des Landes, in der Provinz San Fernando ”, i.e. “in the interior of the country, in the Province of San Fernando”. Following further evidence in his travel report ( Meyen 1834b: 322), we ascertain the type locality as Mostazal , Chachapoal Province , O’Higgins Region, Chile, in particular the area between San Francisco de Mostazal [33.98°S, 70.72°W] and the southern entrance to the Ancestura pass [33.95°S, 70.71°W] GoogleMaps .
