Type species: Trombidium akamushi Brumpt, 1910 , by original designation.

Diagnosis. SIF = 7B-B-3-2111.0000; fPp = N/N/B(N)N(B)N(B); usually fCx = 1.1.1; fSt = 2.2. Eyes 2 + 2. Scutum subrectangular. Sensilla flagelliform, branched.

Distribution. Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia (1 species), North America.

Species included. More than 200 in Leptotrombidium s. str. ( Kudryashova 1998); more than 250 in case Ericotrombidium Vercammen-Grandjean and André, 1966 and Trombiculindus Radford, 1948 are considered as subgenera of Leptotrombidium ( Fernandes & Kulkarni 2003) .
