Type species: Acomatacarus buretti Vercammen-Grandjean, 1956 , by original designation.

Diagnosis. SIF = 7(6)B-B(N)-(2–8)-2(1)(0–2)1(0)1.0(1)0(2)00; fsp = 6.6.6; fCx = 2.1.1; fSt = 0.2. Cheliceral blade with rows of dorsal and ventral teeth. Scutum nearly trapezoidal, nasus present; two AM setae. Sensilla flagelliform. Stigmata and tracheae present. Numbers of setae on leg femora I–III are 6.6.5; onychotriches present.

Hosts. Reptiles.

Distribution. Africa, South Europe (Crimea). This genus is here recorded from Turkey for the first time.

Species included. Matacarus agamae ( Taufflieb, 1960) , M. arabicus ( Radford, 1954) , M. buretti (Vercammen-Grandjean, 1956) , M. crimeaensis Kudryashova, 1995 , M. demrei ( Kepka, 1962) , comb. nov., M. ediosi ( Taufflieb and Mouchet, 1962) , M. maroccanus ( Taufflieb, 1958) . Australian cooki -species group having femoral numbers 6.6.4 ( Vercammen-Grandjean et al. 1973) should probably be excluded from this genus.
