Diagnosis

Body elongate, moderately convex, reddish, with dark-brown stripes and patches. Head surface covered with punctures, anterior third of the head reddish and the posterior two thirds brown. Pronotum with two dark-brown stripes, and with a deep longitudinal impression on disc; transverse line present on anterior third portion of pronotum. Elytra with dark-brown patches and stripes. Distal portion of the femora narrowed. Aedeagus four times longer than wide, with the apex moderately sharp.

Description

Body elongate, moderately convex. Reddish colour with dark-brown stripes and patches. Total length 2.68 mm, greatest width (elytra) 0.88 mm.

Head. Partially retractable, without impressions, surface with microgranulations separated from each other by their own diameter, anterior third reddish and posterior two thirds dark brown. Eyes black protruding laterally; separated from each other by a distance of one eye-width. Antenna long filiform with 11 segments, reaching the elytra, apical antennomere twice as long as preapical, unicolorous. Clypeus reddishbrown, elongated and concave, with a surface covered with punctures and golden setae. Frontoclypeal suture straight. Labrum twice as long as clypeus, anterior margin rounded, and lateral margin moderately sinuous, surface similar to the clypeus. Maxillary and labial palpi short, narrow. Maxillary palpi four segmented, and labial palpi three segmented, reddish in colour.

Thorax. Pronotum as long as wide, anterior margin angled upwards and moderately convex. Humeral angles broadly rounded and elevated, lateral margin sinuous, posterior margin sinuous, strongly concave near to scutellum. Pronotum surface with microgranulations separated by their own diameter, covered with golden setae. Sublateral carinae short, extending one third to a half of the lateral margin, from posterior margin of pronotum. Longitudinal impression short and deep in the middle of the disc, with the posterior portion narrower than the anterior portion. One depression on each side of the posterior region. Two dark-brown longitudinal pronotal stripes, from anterior to posterior margin. Elytra longer than wide, anterior margin strongly sinuous, lateral margin moderately sinuous and apex truncate. Median suture elevated. Carinae on intervals 3 (on anterior 1/5), 6 (on anterior half) and 8 (on posterior half); surface with puncture rows separated by double rows of setae. Dark-brown patches at the apex of most intervals (absent only on intervals 1 and 11), stripes on interval 1 (anterior 1/5), on intervals 2 and 3 (anterior 3/4), on intervals 4 and 5 (extending 1/6 posteriad, from the half of the elytra), and on intervals 6 to 11 (anterior 2/3). Scutellum reddish-brown, shield-shaped, and covered by microgranulations. Epipleura covered by tomentum. Hind wings macropterous. Prosternum reddish brown with the lateral portion covered by tomentum, forming a belt with the anterior portion of hypomerum. Hypomerum with black microgranulations. Prosternal process as long as wide, reaching the coxae, with posterior margin moderately sinuous, surface alutaceous. Mesoventrite twice as long as wide, with a shallow depression to receive the prosternal process, surface alutaceous. Metaventrite very long, length equal to the combined length of the prosternum and mesoventrite, the lateral portion covered by tomentum, central portion alutaceous, without punctures, carinae or setae. Legs elongated, covered by tomentum, without setae. Coxae rounded. Femora strongly narrowed at the distal margin. Tibiae very slender and elongated with a discreet row of fringes on 3/4 distal; two rows of short spines on distal half of pro- and mesotibia; metatibia laterally flattened with recumbent setae. Elongated tarsus with 5-5-5 formula, without setae, last tarsomere longer than the first four combined. Claws large, stout with feebly dentate base.

Abdomen. Five ventrites. Moderately arcuate on anterior and posterior margin. Lateral margin moderately rounded. Surface covered with tomentum, absent only in the median portion of the first ventrite. Fifth ventrite with pronounced apex, without setae and with lateral margin moderately slightly produced posterolaterally.

Genitalia. ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 (c)) Without punctures or setae. Phallobase twice as long as wide. Parameres long and narrow, reaching 4/5 of the length of the aedeagus. Aedeagus four times as long as wide, with the apex moderately sharp.

Female

External morphology similar to male. No sexual dimorphism detected.

Etymology

The specific epithet roellae is in honour of MSc Talita Roell, taxonomic specialist on stink bugs (Heteroptera), for her help and support with this paper.

Comments

Hintonelmis roellae sp. nov. resembles Hintonelmis messa Hinton, 1971 , in the carinae on the elytra, the lack of tomentum on disc of first ventrite, and the pronotum with stripes, but can be differentiated by the elytral colour, and by the following characteristics: H. roellae has the anterior third of the head reddish and the hind two thirds brown; antenna unicolorous; pronotum with a transverse line in the anterior third; a deep longitudinal impression present on the pronotal disc; two rows of spines on pro- and mesotibiae, metatibiae flattened laterally, and aedeagus moderately sharp at the apex. H. messa has the head uniformly black or very dark-brown collared; apical antennomere of the antenna dark-brown colour; pronotum without a transverse line, discreet and short longitudinal impression in the centre of the disc; all tibiae similar, not flattened and without spines, and aedeagus strongly pointed at the apex.

This is the first description of a new species of Hintonelmis from the South of Brazil (Santa Catarina State). Hinton (1971) referred to three specimens of a new species from Santa Catarina State, but he never described the species. Perhaps Hintonelmis roellae sp. nov. is this species, but we could find only two specimens (a pair) in Hinton’ s collection. It appears that, contrary to the opinion of Hinton (1971), this genus has a wide distribution throughout South America: Jäch et al. (2016) recently listed it ( Hintonelmis messa )
