Status at New Ireland. First recorded from West Harbour , New Hanover as Zebrasoma veliferum by Kailola (1975: 231); specimens collected in Kavieng area in June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 15, Z. veliferum ). KFRS material. Two specimens photographed at Lissenung Island , Kavieng District, 4 m depth, by Dean Tully on 6 July 2011 .
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to southern Great Barrier Reef ( Australia), Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone; solitary juveniles found among rocks or coral of shallow protected, sometimes turbid reefs, 0–30 m depth. Marine.
