Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken near Nusa Island, Kavieng District at 5–23 m depth, St. KR 8, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken at Martha's Shoal, off eastern New Hanover , at 7–41 m depth, St. KR 122, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East and South Africa, Aldabra, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands and Society Islands, north to southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe Island and New Caledonia. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs, 2–15 m depth. Marine.
