Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Hawaiian and Line islands, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to eastern Australia and Lord Howe Island, straggling to northern New Zealand. Found on seaward reef slopes and in passes, 4–131 m depth. Marine.
