Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market by Barry C. Russell on 21 and 28 June 2014; a video of a specimen taken off Pochol Island, east of New Hanover , at 6–7 m depth, St. KD 62, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands (eastern Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Found above sand bottoms near reefs, 3–46 m depth. Marine.
