Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken at Kavieng, Kavieng District, 0–11 m depth, St. KR 22, on 5 June 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken off Nubilus Island , off southeastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia and New South Wales ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Found in coral-rich areas of coral reefs, 1–20 m depth. Marine.
