Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Drei Inseln Harbour, New Hanover by Munro (1958: 204–205); subsequently reported from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129); specimens photographed at Kavieng fish market by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Palau and New Guinea, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia. Solitary or in groups, on coastal reefs, in lagoons and on seaward reef slopes, 10–80 m depth. Marine.
