Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kawieng, New Ireland as Apogon lateralis by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 57), based on ZMH 12755.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: East Africa east to Samoa, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Forming aggregations in sheltered bays and lagoons, including mangrove habitats, occasionally entering the lower reaches of freshwater rivers and streams, 0–3 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
