Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 14 and 28 June 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Marquesas and Gambier islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, Queensland ( Australia), Lord Howe Island and Tonga. Found on seaward slopes in coral or rocky reef habitats, 8–250 m depth. Marine.
