The water mite family Oxidae is represented in New Zealand by the genus Flabellifrontipoda , with nine species known so far. Cook (1983) collected a specimen of the genus Oxus , but left it unnamed as only a nymph was taken. Smit (1996) collected water mites in a number of lentic and lotic locations of the South Island, New Zealand, but no other members of the family Oxidae were found.
