Type Locality: "sur la côte du Brésil.", probably upper Amazon River.

Vernacular Names: Amazon River Dolphin.

Synonyms: Inia rostratus (G. Cuvier 1812) ; Inia frontatus (G. Cuvier 1823) .

Subspecies: :

Subspecies Inia geoffrensis subsp. geoffrensis Blainville 1817

Subspecies Inia geoffrensis subsp. boliviensis d'Orbigny 1834

Subspecies Inia geoffrensis subsp. humboldtiana Pilleri and Gihr 1978

Distribution: Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Columbia: Amazon, Negro, Mamore ( Bolivia), and Orinoco River systems.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: Reviewed by Best and de Silva (1989). Includes boliviensis , see Casinos and Ocaña (1979); but also see Pilleri and Gihr (1977), who considered it a distinct species. Rice (1998:93) recognized I. g. geoffrensis (Amazon River Dolphin) , I. g. humboldtiana (Orinoco River Dolphin) and I. g. boliviensis (Bolivian River Dolphin) .
