Polygonatum daminense H.J.Yang & D.F.Cui View in CoL , sp. nov. ( Figs. 1–2 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 ).

Polygonatum daminense (ĘWȒffi in Chinese) is similar to P. filipes , but differs in having rhizome tuberous vs moniliform; inflorescence raceme vs umbel; peduncle wiry, raise up vs slender, hang down; pedicel 2–2.5 cm long vs 0.5–1.5 cm long; bract leaflike, leathery, persistent vs linear, membranous, caducous; bractlet leaflike, present vs none; perianth yellowish white vs yellowish green.

Type: — CHINA. Zhejiang Province, Pan’an County, Damin village, alt. 422 m a.s.l., 4 May 2019 H. J. Yang 201902 (holotype CANT, isotype CANT).

Perennial terrestrial herbs. Rhizome tuberous, 1–1.5 cm thick. Stem erect, 30–50 cm long, 3.5 mm in diameter, glabrous. Leaves alternate; sessile; leaf blade leathery, oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate, 8.5–11 × 1.5–3 cm, prominently 7- veined, glabrous ventrally, shortly pubescent on veinlets abaxially, base obtuse, margin entire, apex long acuminate to obtuse tipped. Inflorescence a raceme, axillary, 1–2 flowered; peduncle 4–5 cm, flattened, lower part slenderer than upper part; bract leaflike, oblong-lanceolate, 6–7× 1–1.7 cm; bractlet leaflike, 2–4.2 × 0.3–0.9 cm, borne on proximal part of pedicel. Flowers ± pendulous; pedicel slender, 2–2.5 cm long, 0.5 mm in diameter, glabrous; perianth yellowish white; perianth tube campanulate-cylindric, 2.2 × 0.5 cm; lobes 6, oblong-ovate, 4 × 2 mm, distinctly shorter than the tube. Stamens 6, adnate to perianth tube, filaments slender, slightly compressed, 6 mm long, shortly cottony; anthers suboblong, 3 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, 3 × 1 mm, glabrous; style slender, 1–1.2 cm long; stigma small, cilia on the surface. Fruits and seeds were not seen.

Distribution and habitat:—The species has been found so far in the mountain area of Pan’an county, Zhejiang province, China. It grows at the edge of the tropical monsoon rainforest at an elevation of about 420 m. Accompanying species include Corchoropsis psilocarpa Harms & Loes. ex Gilg & Loes. , Indocalamus tessellatus (Munro) Keng f. , Carex chungii Z. P. Wang , Viola magnifica Ching J. Wang ex X.D. Wang , Aster ageratoides Turcz. The type locality of the new species belongs to the border area of Zhejiang Dapanshan National Natural Reserve, which mainly protects the rare and endangered medicinal plants and the germplasm resources of medicinal materials. In recent years, several new species have been found from the natural reserve ( Chen et al. 2013, 2018, Jiang et al. 2018). The discovery of P. daminense remarks on the need for additional taxonomic studies for a better understanding of the diversity of Zhejiang Dapanshan National Natural Reserve.

Phenology:—It flowers from April to May.

Etymology:—The species is named after the type locality, Damin village, Pan’an County, Zhejiang Province, China. The village is one of the famous areas of production of the traditional Chinese medicine with a history of more than one thousand years.
