Inflorescence a densely 20–35-flowered, compound raceme; peduncle c. 46.0 cm long; rachis 49.0 cm long. Floral pedicel 1.7 × 0.1 cm, warty; sepals greenish yellow with purple stripes, 1.5 × 0.4 cm, pendent, margin entire, apex acute; petals greenish yellow with purple stripes, spatulate, 0.9 × 0.4 cm, pendent, margin undulate, apex acute; lip with claw 0.2 × 0.2 cm, lateral lobes free relative to median lobe, 0.6 × 0.3 cm, whitish to yellowish with purple stripes, at about a 90° angle to the midlobe (in the flattened lip), not overlapping it, margin entire, apex acute, midlobe deltoid to rounded, 0.6 × 0.6 cm, whitish to yellowish with purple stripes, sinuous, margin undulate, apex obtuse, callus cymbiform, flabellate; column clavate, 0.9 × 0.2 cm, clinandrium apex tridentate, lateral teeth triangular, apex acute, arms of the column quadrate, 0.18 × 0.15 cm, apex obtuse; stigma elliptic to triangular, with basal hooks; anther one, yellow, 0.25 × 0.20 cm.

Distribution and habitat:— Endemic to Chapada Diamantina , Bahia ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 ).

Phenology:— Flowering November.

Etymology:— Honouring the collector of the type, João Marcelino de Sá.

Taxonomic notes:— In a similar manner to E. bicalhoi , we did not find specimens of E. joaosaiana in any herbaria, except for the type material. Based on the type, illustration and photograph in the description, we consider the possibility that this taxon could be a natural hybrid between E. andrichii and E. oncidioides . This is supported by some clear intermediate characters between these species, such as shape of the flowers. The lip texture is similar to that of E. andrichii with the colours similar to E. oncidioides . These two species are also common in the municipality of Seabra, Chapada Diamantina , where the type of E. joaosaiana was collected (Campacci & Bohnke 2008). However, we need further fieldwork and molecular studies to confirm this hypothesis.
