Type material. The syntype BS.061.07.016 from the Rupelian of Liguria ( Italy) was illustrated by Sacco (1895, 1904) and is stored in the collection of the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali Torino (Ferrero-Mortara et al. 1984). This specimen is designated herein as lectotype.

Discussion. A rather small sized and slender species of Allmonia , characterized by flat sided whorls with densely spaced spiral cords, was described under various names from the Rupelian of Liguria (e.g. Dego, Mioglia, Carcare, Sassello) in northern Italy by Sacco (1895) and Rovereto (1900, 1914). Sacco (1895) introduced three available ‘variation-names’. Neglecting the principle of priority, Rovereto (1904) rejected these names and introduced Protoma excathedralis as new name for Sacco’s taxa, which is clearly a subjective junior synonym. Rovereto (1914) described an additional spire fragment from Sassello as Protoma ferruminata . The status of this taxon remains unclear as the type is lost ( Bonci et al. 2014). From the illustration in Rovereto (1914), it seems that Protoma ferruminata is another subjective junior synonym of Allmonia alterniplicata . As first revisers, we chose alterniplicata as name for this species ( ICZN, 1999, Art. 24.2.1). Protoma excathedralis bellunensis Venzo, 1937 might also represent this species but is stratigraphically younger (Chattian).

Distribution. Western Tethys. Rupelian (early Oligocene): Liguria ( Italy) ( Sacco 1895; Rovereto 1900, 1914);?Chattian (late Oligocene): Belluno Province ( Italy) ( Venzo 1937);?Oligocene of Libya (Stefanini 1921).
