Family Striariidae Bollman, 1888 View in CoL .

The family is delimited by many of the characters listed above, the most important being the hood-like collum, the 10 to 16-crested rings and the trilobed telson—all unique or nearly so among chordeumatidan millipedes.

Studies of extensive collections of striariids from the Pacific Coast states (California, Oregon and Washington) as well as specimens from Idaho and from the southeastern U.S., have convinced me that a more analytic structure is required for the family, in light of the striking (as yet undescribed) diversity and disparity present in the western part of North America. This will be elaborated in future papers, but for now I grouped the valid genera of the family into two subfamilies, one new.
