Originally only L. oreoderoides Thomson, 1864 was included in Lathroeus , but its type-locality was not mentioned. Lacordaire (1872) reported about the type-locality (translated): “The genus [ Lathroeus ] includes only a beautiful species ( oreoderoides J. Thoms. ) with same size as Lagocheirus araneiformis and of which M. J. Thomson did not indicate the exact habitat, but which is obviously American.” Gemminger (1873) indicated “Amer. mer.” [Southern America] as type-locality. Tavakilian & Chevillotte (2019) indicated “ Brazil ” as type-locality. From Aurivillius (1923) to Monné (2020), the species has been recorded for South America (sometimes with a question mark after this place).

Wappes et al. (2013) recorded L. oreoderoides from Bolivia (Cochabamba). However, the specimen figured by them is not L. oreoderoides and does not belong to Lathroeus . Actually, the specimen identified by them as L. oreoderoides ( Wappes et al. 2013, fig. 48) is Anisopodus batesi Gilmour, 1965 . Accordingly, L. oreoderoides is formally excluded from the Bolivian fauna.
