29. Myoxanthus monophyllus Poeppig & Endlicher (1865: 50) View in CoL . (Fig. 15F–H)
Homotypic synonyms: Pleurothallis poeppigii Lindley (1836: 354) . Humboltia poeppigii (Lindl.) Kuntze (1891: 668) , as “ Humboldtia ”. Pleurothallis myoxanthus Schlechter (1921: 141) , nom. illeg. superfl.
TYPE:— PERU. Huanuco: common and epiphytic in the forests near Casapi, Feb, Poeppig , P.1743 (holotype: W!; isotype: K!).
Distribution: — Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Notes:— Myoxanthus monophyllus is distinguished by its multiple congested flowers with long narrow sepals and petals and pubescent floral bract covering the pedicel, ovary and base of the perianth. Christenson (1995) reported an isotype of M. monophyllus at LE, which we have not seen. Myoxanthus gorgon is similar but with a shorter, reflexed perianth (see comments under M. gorgon for a comparison). Pleurothallis poeppigii Lindl. and P. myoxanthus Schltr.
are replacement names based on M. monophyllus as clearly stated by their respective authors. The two names are therefore homotypic synonyms, the latter superfluous.
