Scydmaenus (Corbulifer) bellenderanus View in CoL sp. n.
( Figs 27–29 View FIGURES 27–29 , 57 View FIGURES 55–65 , 70 View FIGURE 70 )
Type material. HOLOTYPE: ( AUSTRALIA, QUEENSLAND): ♂, two labels: " AUST:QLD:NE / Bellender Ker,Top / stn. 1 Dec 1998 / G. B. Monteith" [white, printed], "Q.M. BERLESATE 977 / 17°16'SX 145°51'E / Rainforest, 1560m / Sieved litter" [white, printed] (QM).
Diagnosis. Male metatibia with a moderately large glandular broadening occupying distal half, broadened portion only slightly broader than metafemur, mesal tibial margin sinuate, lateral (external) tibial margin weakly convex in proximal half, strongly bent near middle at a nearly right angle, then nearly straight at the broadest site of tibia, and slightly concave in distal fourth; aedeagus in dorsal view slender and equally broad near base and in subapical region, with elongate and subtriangular apical portion; apical projections short, weakly and evenly curved dorsad.
Description. Body of male ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 27–29 ) strongly convex, moderately dark brown, covered with setae slightly lighter than cuticle; BL 1.73 mm.
Head broadest at small eyes, HL 0.33 mm, HW 0.35 mm; tempora in lateral view as long as 3 × length of eye, indistinctly convergent posterad and posteriorly bent mesad at a slightly obtuse angle. Punctures on frons and vertex very fine and shallow, inconspicuous; setae short, sparse and suberect. Antennae slender, AnL 0.95 mm, antennomeres I–VI each distinctly elongate, VII–X each transverse (IX and X slightly so), IX–X much larger than VIII, XI slightly shorter than IX–X combined, 1.8 × as long as broad.
Pronotum rounded, broadest near anterior third; PL 0.48 mm, PW 0.45 mm. Antebasal pits indistinct. Punctures on pronotal disc very fine and shallow, inconspicuous; setae short, sparse and suberect.
Elytra oval, broadest in front of middle; EL 0.93 mm, EW 0.73 mm, EI 1.28; apices separately rounded. Punctures relatively large and dense, shallow but distinct, especially in anterior half, where they are separated by spaces subequal to diameters of punctures; setae longer and denser than those on pronotum, suberect to erect.
Metatibia ( Fig. 57 View FIGURES 55–65 ) in dorsal view with slender proximal half; distal half strongly and abruptly broadened, weakly convex dorsally, with a small denticle near distal fourth of external margin, lacking dorsolateral 'pocket'.
Aedeagus ( Figs 28–29 View FIGURES 27–29 ) slender; AeL 0.40 mm; in dorsal view median lobe equally broad near base and in distal third, shallowly and broadly constricted near middle, rapidly and strongly narrowed in subapical region, forming a nearly subtriangular, elongate apical portion with apical projections very short and evenly, weakly curved dorsad.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Queensland; northern-eastern coast of Australia ( Fig. 70 View FIGURE 70 ).
Etymology. Locotypical, after Mt. Bellender Ker.
Remarks. This species is most similar to S. tamborinensis and S. monstrosetibialis ; adults of all of them have a portion of metatibiae abruptly broadened. Males of Scydmaenus bellenderanus have the broadened portion of metatibiae much smaller and of a different shape than males of the two similar congeners, the elytra more distinctly punctate, and the aedeagus of a different shape both in dorsal and lateral view.
