Revised diagnosis. Male metatibia with large glandular broadening in distal half which is much broader than metafemur, mesal tibial margin sinuate, lateral (external) tibial margin concave in proximal half and strongly convex in distal half; aedeagus in dorsal view broadest near base, with distinctly delimited elongate apical portion, which is divided into two very short lateral projections strongly bent dorsad.
Redescription. Body of male ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17–23 ) strongly convex, reddish brown, covered with setae slightly lighter than cuticle; BL 1.95–2.13 mm (mean 2.05 mm).
Head broadest at small eyes, HL 0.38–0.40 mm (mean 0.39 mm), HW 0.40–0.43 mm (mean 0.42 mm); tempora in lateral view as long as 2.5 length of eye, slightly convergent posterad and posteriorly bent mesad at a slightly obtuse angle. Punctures on frons and vertex very fine and shallow, inconspicuous; setae short, sparse and suberect. Antennae slender, AnL 1.03–1.10 mm (mean 1.07 mm), antennomeres I–VI each distinctly elongate, VII and VIII each slightly transverse, IX and X much larger than VIII, each slightly transverse, XI about as long as IX– X combined, nearly twice as long as broad.
Pronotum rounded, broadest slightly behind anterior third; PL 0.55–0.60 mm (mean 0.57 mm), PW 0.48–0.55 mm (mean 0.52 mm). Antebasal pits indistinct. Punctures on pronotal disc very fine and shallow, inconspicuous; setae short, sparse and suberect.
Elytra oval, broadest in front of middle; EL 1.00– 1.13 mm (mean 1.10 mm), EW 0.80–0.88 mm (mean 0.85 mm), EI 1.26–1.41; apices separately rounded. Punctures relatively large and dense but very shallow; setae longer and denser than those on pronotum, suberect to erect.
Metatibia ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 55–65 ) in dorsal view with slender proximal half, which is strongly concave dorsally in its submedian region; distal half strongly and abruptly broadened, convex dorsally, with sharp dorsal edge and a short dorsal 'pocket' near middle of external margin bearing a group of dense setae.
Aedeagus ( Figs 18–23 View FIGURES 17–23 ) moderately slender; AeL 0.41 mm; in dorsal view median lobe broadest near basal third, shallowly and broadly constricted near middle, and rapidly narrowed in subapical region, so that the apical portion is well-demarcated, elongate subtrapezoidal, with apical projections conspicuously short, curved dorsoproximad.
Female. Similar to male but with unmodified metatibiae and distinctly smaller eyes; temple about 5 × as long as eye. BL 2.00– 2.15 mm (mean 2.07 mm); HL 0.38–0.40 mm (mean 0.38 mm), HW 0.40–0.43 mm (mean 0.41 mm), AnL 1.00– 1.05 mm (mean 1.01 mm); PL 0.55–0.60 mm (mean 0.58 mm), PW 0.50–0.55 mm (mean 0.53 mm); EL 1.08–1.15 mm (mean 1.11 mm), EW 0.85–0.90 mm (mean 0.88 mm), EI 1.22–1.32.
Distribution. Queensland and New South Wales; central-eastern coast of Australia ( Fig. 70 View FIGURE 70 ).
Remarks. Franz (1975) differentiated S. tamborinensis tamborinensis , ssp. cunninghamensis and ssp. maipotonensis on the basis of differences in the proportions of antennomeres and aedeagal structures. Examination of the type specimens of each subspecies did not reveal any differences in the antennae. The differences in the aedeagus observed by Franz were due to rotations of the sclerotized endophallic structures, which partly stick out of the ostium and in repose their distal component (the copulatory piece) is visible in lateral view ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 17–23 ) as a rodlike projection. The copulatory piece can flip dorsad or proximad ( Figs 21, 23 View FIGURES 17–23 ); differences in its position can also be seen in the dorsal view ( Figs 18, 20, 22 View FIGURES 17–23 ).
Males of Scydmaenus tamborinensis can be easily identified on the basis of strongly and abruptly broadened metatibiae ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 55–65 ) and the aedeagal apex, which is divided into a pair of small lobes strongly bent dorsad, the bent portions are very short compared to all remaining species of Corbulifer .
