Type Locality: "cordiliéres du Chili," restricted by Cabrera (1957) to "los montañas al este de Trujillo, departamento de la Libertad, Perú." .
Vernacular Names: Spectacled Bear.
Synonyms: Tremarctos frugilegus (Tschudi 1844) ; Tremarctos lasallei Maria 1924 ; Tremarctos majori Thomas 1902 ; Tremarctos nasutus (Sclater 1868) ; Tremarctos thomasi (Hornaday 1911) .
Distribution: Mountainous regions of W Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama (?), Peru, W Venezuela.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Some authors have considered this genus as the only extent member of the subfamily Tremarctinae ( Thenius, 1976) .
