Habitat and phenology: —Creeping canopy epiphyte. Primary evergreen broad-leaved forests at elevation of about 1500 m a.s.l. Flowers in June.

Distribution: — Vietnam (Khanh Hoa Province). Thailand, China, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Lesser Sunda Islands.

Conservation assessment: —According to the IUCN Red List 2022, the species is known in Vietnam from a single site and has a very restricted distribution. This site falls within Hon Ba Nature Reserve which has good habitat conditions and the plants seem to be secure. As such, no threat is known for this species yet. Accordingly, this species can be assessed as a Least Concerned (LC) for Vietnam.

Note: — Bulbophyllum ovalifolium shares the warty lip with B. catenarium , but can be distinguished by its ellipsoid lip (vs. triangular lip, with short claw at base and globular warty apex).

The occurrence of B. ignevenosum in Vietnam was based on the specimen C.R.S.T.228 sig. (MNHN-P-P00348065!), which was described as B. bryoides Guillaumin (1957: 485) then regarded later as synonym of former (Seidenfaden 1992). However, the original description and the hand-drawing on type specimen sheet of B. bryoides indicated its lip entirely verruculose, which clearly fits with B. ovalifolium ( Blume 1825: 318) Lindley (1830: 49) and surely represent B. ovalifolium . In contrast, the original description and drawing of B. ignevenosum by Carr show an obviously smooth lip. In the absence of other critical morphological differences, we regard B. bryoides as a synonym of B. ovalifolium .

Species examined: — VIETNAM, Khanh Hoa Province: Cam Lam District, Hon Ba Nature Reserve, elevation about 1500 m a.s.l., 21 June 2019, Truong Ba Vuong, Tu Bao Ngan, Mang Van Lam, BV378 (VNM VNM00070770).
